The tree reaches heights up to about 50m and a diameter up to 2m. The wood is widely spread throughout Central America, mainly on the east coast, but also in tropical South America. The heartwood of mahogany is light red-brown to deep brown-red, also known as mahogany red. The sapwood is white-yellowish to lighter than the heartwood. The Brasil Mahogany is one of the best woods in the world timber trade in the decorative sector.
