The numerous burls in the veneer figure of Madrone burl frequently appear in small groups and resemble the rounded tops of small hills. Between those shapes are subtle waves created by the course of the annual rings. The orangey brown to pale reddish brown colors recall a warm and inviting watercolor and the very similar veneer figure of the sycamore burl. Blue discolorations are often seen.
