Smoked Ebony
Wood species / Trade name:
Smoked Ebony, Ebenholz, Coromandel
Names:
- German: Macassar geräuchert
Botanical name:
Diospyros celebica
Character / Color:
The very hard Makassar belongs to the colored ebony woods. Its elegant dark veneer pattern has a grey-brown to red-brown ground colour with dark brown to black stripes. The smooth and strikingly glossy surfaces are thus given a pronounced stripy structure. Dark mineral constituents are occasionally visible on the side surfaces in the pore grooves. Smoked Macassar is Macassar wood modified in colour. During "smoking", the wood is fumigated with ammonia or ammonia solution (ammonia water). This discolours the wood and gives it a brown to dark brown colour.
