The red oak has firm, straight grained and slightly porous wood in a soft, slightly reddish "fiery" tone. Due to the smoking process or the reaction of the tannic acid in the wood with ammonia, the colour darkens to a light to dark brown colour. On the longitudinal surfaces striking grain or stripes can be seen.
