Brown oak

Wood species / Trade name:

Brown oak

Names:

  • German: Brauneiche eur.
  • French: Chêne Brun
  • Chinese: 棕橡

Botanical name:

Quercus petrea /robur

Character / Color:

The brown oak is not a separate species. Instead, it is an oak wood whose heartwood has been discolored by red rot without an accompanying deterioration of the wood's strength properties. If the red rot penetrates the entire heart, the wood takes on different shades of dark brown. The longitudinal plane contains distinctive figures or stripes resulting from the sharply separated annual rings while the eye-catching rift grain on the radial plane delivers exquisite patterns.
