Growth area of Emien is whole West Africa from Sierra Leone over Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria to the Congo and Central Africa to East Africa.
 The tree grows up to 30m high, the diameter up to 1m. Sapwood and heartwood are not clearly distinguishable. The sapwood is very broad and, like the heartwood almost white to slightly yellowish or light grey when fresh.
