Empenit Red is a heavy, homogeneous wood veneer with a medium to coarse texture. The heartwood has a consistent medium to dark reddish-brown color, clearly distinct from the pale pink sapwood. It is characterized by fine white lines or arcs from resin canals and glossy streaks caused by interlocked grain. Fresh wood has a slightly resinous scent, while dry wood is odorless.
