Names:
- German: Eiche eur. Briccola
Botanical name:
Quercus petraea
Character / Color:
The long oak poles, which are characterized by the tides in the lagoons of Venice, are called briccola. The Venetian Oaks are up to 18m long and remain in the sea water and sea bed for 10 to 20 years and are exposed to the shells and shipworms. The wood is covered from the inside with round holes, which create very striking drawings and shapes in the wood. The "briccole" thus acquire the colour of antique oak in more or less intense tones, depending on how long they have been under water in the lagoon.
