Merbau is a tree species of the family of peas, Fabaceae, which is native to the Indo-Pacific. It extends from Tanzania and Madagascar East over India and Queensland, Australia to the Pacific island Samoa, with a typical height of 7 to 25m and a diameter of 0.8 to 1.50m. The logs are usually branch-free up to 15m. The sapwood is 5 to 8cm wide and yellowish-white. Core-wood is clearly visible, has a red-brown colour with copper-coloured reflections and becomes darker when exposed to light.
