This is a medium-sized tree between 15 and 20m high. The diameter is between 80 to 100cm. It is widespread on the Balkan Peninsula, on the Italian Peninsula and in southern France. The mostly wide sapwood is reddish-white or light reddish brown in colour. The colour of the core varies between a light and dark reddish brown, which darkens under the effect of light. Some of the core wood is also colour-striped . When steamed, the wood becomes more reddish.
